Phonics & Early Reading

Learning to read is one of the most important milestones in a child's education, and phonics plays a key role in helping children become confident, fluent readers. Phonics teaches children to recognise the sounds that letters make and how these sounds can be blended together to read words and segmented to support spelling and writing.

At High View, children are taught phonics through engaging, structured lessons that build progressively from recognising sounds to reading and writing with increasing confidence and accuracy. Alongside phonics, we foster a love of reading through stories, rhymes, discussion, and regular opportunities to share books both at school and at home.

The video below, presented by our Early Reading Leader, explains how phonics is taught at High View and provides practical advice and strategies to help support your child's reading journey at home.
