Literacy
Literacy skills help children understand and use language in reading, writing, and communication. Within this area, we focus on:
- Reading – developing the skills to recognise words, understand stories, and enjoy books.
- Writing – encouraging children to express themselves through marks, letters, and words.
- Phonics – teaching the sounds that letters make to support reading and spelling.
These skills are essential for children to become confident readers and writers, opening up a world of learning and creativity.
In Nursery
In Nursery, children develop an interest in books and stories, explore sounds through songs and rhymes, and begin to recognise some letters and sounds through playful activities.
In Reception
In Reception, children learn phonics systematically, blending sounds to read words and starting to write simple sentences. They enjoy a rich range of books and are encouraged to use writing to share their ideas.
