Communication and Language
Communication and language skills are at the heart of learning and social development. Within this area, we focus on three important skills:
- Listening and Attention – helping children focus and understand what they hear.
- Understanding – supporting children to make sense of words and instructions.
- Speaking – encouraging children to express themselves clearly and confidently.
These skills build a strong foundation for reading, writing, and positive relationships.
In Nursery
In Nursery, children develop their communication and language through songs, stories, rhymes, and lots of opportunities for talk and play. Staff encourage children to listen, join in, and share their thoughts, helping them build vocabulary and confidence in expressing themselves.
In Reception
In Reception, children build on these early skills by speaking in longer sentences, listening to others in conversations, and using language to solve problems and share ideas. Through role play, storytelling, and class discussions, they learn to communicate clearly and begin to develop the language needed for reading and writing.
