School Readiness

Starting school is an exciting milestone for both children and their families. Developing key independence skills – such as dressing themselves, using the toilet, managing their belongings, and following simple instructions – can help children feel confident and ready for this important transition.

School readiness is about much more than academic skills. Being able to communicate their needs, take turns, build relationships, and develop resilience helps children settle into new routines and make the most of the opportunities school provides. Research shows that children who begin school with strong self-help and social skills are more likely to thrive both emotionally and academically.

The video and resources below provide practical guidance and ideas to help support your child as they prepare to start school. Although some of the information refers specifically to starting Reception, the advice is equally valuable for children beginning Nursery within a primary school setting.
