Spanish

At High View, children in Years 3–6 take part in weekly Spanish lessons as part of the Modern Foreign Languages element of the national curriculum. We believe that fostering curiosity and respect for other cultures prepares pupils to become confident, open-minded global citizens in an increasingly interconnected world. Spanish is the fourth most spoken language in the world, and learning it opens doors to a rich global culture shared by more than 20 countries across Europe, Africa, and the Americas. By teaching Spanish, we aim to equip our pupils with practical and relevant communication skills that will broaden their horizons, enhance their understanding of other cultures, and lay a strong foundation for future language learning. Learning Spanish will equip our pupils with practical and relevant skills that will support their current and future learning.

Throughout the school year, pupils complete five themed units, covering topics such as Aprendo Español (I am learning Spanish), where they learn simple greetings; La Fecha (The Date), where they practise expressing dates and birthdays; and Me Presento (I Introduce Myself), where they learn to talk about themselves in Spanish.

In addition to these core units, children also explore cultural traditions linked to Christmas and Easter, as well as learning about key Spanish-speaking people and events.  This cultural exploration helps pupils appreciate the diversity and richness of the Spanish-speaking world while deepening their understanding of global perspectives.

To deliver these lessons, we use the excellent Language Angels programme, which provides engaging visuals, audio clips, and language-building resources to support children’s learning. Each lesson places a strong emphasis on listening and speaking—two essential skills that form the foundation of every child’s journey in learning to communicate confidently in Spanish.
