Understanding the World

Understanding the World helps children make sense of the environment around them, encouraging curiosity about people, places, technology, and the natural world. Through exploration and investigation, children develop knowledge and skills that support their learning across all areas.

In this area, children learn about:

• People and Communities – discovering different cultures, families, and communities.
• The World – exploring nature, weather, and living things.
• Technology – using tools and devices to solve problems and create.

In Nursery
Children begin by exploring their immediate environment, learning about their families, animals, plants, and simple technology through hands-on experiences.

In Reception
Children extend their knowledge by investigating the wider world, asking questions, and using technology to support their learning.
