Literacy

Literacy

We are committed to ensuring that our children make excellent progress in reading and writing. we work hard during the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 to ensure that phonics skills are well embedded to underpin reading and writing. We offer a range of activities during daily reading sessions and beyond to ensure that our children read both for pleasure and for information. Older children are paired with younger children during Paired Class Reading, and more regularly through our Reading Buddy system which supports younger children in making good progress. Half termly 'Books to Bury your Head in' are exceedingly popular with Key Stage 2 children and our 'Author of the Term' in every class ensures that reading is exciting. Year 4 - 6 are taught to deepen their comprehension through whole class reading lessons. Both our Independent Learning Area (ILA) ad classroom book corners have a range of books for children to take home.

Teachers work hard to plan stimulating Literacy lessons using ICT, outdoor learning, visual stimuli, exciting texts, partner and group work so that children are motivated to write. Literacy lessons are fully integrated within Discovery Lessons (topic) so that all learning opportunities are used to embed literacy skills and ensure that learning is exciting. We respond thoroughly to children's writing in our marking to ensure that they know exactly what they have achieved and what their next steps are. Emphasis is placed on technical aspects of writing such as handwriting, grammar and punctuation as well as the overall effect and purpose.

Grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and spelling are taught as separate lessons and applied to children’s writing at every opportunity. Each child has a Star Writer Mat which contains their personal writing targets for them to refer to whenever they write.

Key Stage 1 Phonics Scheme

We currently use the Phonics Play website, using the planning format for phases 1-5.

Key Stage 1 Reading Scheme

We have a selection of schemes to choose from:

Oxford Reading Tree

ORT Project X

Rigby Star banded books.

Collins Big Cat and many more...

'l particularly like bug club because it gives you so many opportunities for books that you eventually find one you like! Adventure and fantasy books to name a few, exciting twists and turns also the most magical thing is putting it back on the shelf when you've finished. Authors of the term are good because usually you have never heard of them. They allow you to discover new stories! I love writing fiction because it sets my imagination free. I always like discovering new words and their meaning, even if i don't like what l am writing about l will try my best.' Kristina (Year 6)

'We do stories about a lot of different things such as fantasy stories, recounts about our trips, instructions, realistic, fiction, non-fiction and unrealistic. We learn different ways of gathering our ideas such as drama working, partner working, purple pen questions, dictionary and thesaurus, reading books because they help you with spellings and vocabulary, Star Writer Mats help us because our targets help us to improve our writing and show us what to do. For reading we do reading for enjoyment and we have Author of the Term and Book of the Month, so we can read a wider range of books. We have reading that helps get onto higher reading levels and improves what we understand.  (Year 6)
